How to Stop "New Hardware Found"

I am trying to update a video card driver. I uninstall the driver, it says
to reboot, I reboot and then the "New Hardware Found" balloon pops up and
automatically reinstalls teh driver I just uninstalled. Everything I've read
says I should just "cancel" the wizard, but there is no cancel button or
prompt of any kind, just the ballon saying what it is doing. I also tried
just starting up in VGA mode, but that didn't work either.

How can I stop the driver from automatically installing so that I can
actually uninstall my driver?

What happens when you open the Device Manager, Display Adapter,
Properties of the device, Driver tab, click "Update Driver"?

Elmo, I took your advice and tried the "Update Driver" route. I won't go
into the gory details, but I found some tips at ATI's website on installing
the driver using this method (funny that they made it nearly impossible to
find unless you already knew what you were looking for). I was able to
successfully update the driver. However, I had been able to update the
dirver in the past, but without deleting the old driver compeletly. This
then caused my graphics programs to crash regularly. The test will be if the
programs can run without crashing since I never uninstalled the old driver.

Thanks for your help Elmo. Even if this doesn't work, you still let me make
some forward progress. If it does work, I'm going to put a little Elmo
shrine in my office.
