how to start a driver?

I disabled a sound card driver in order to install an E-MU 0404 digital
audio system. The drivers are not started as noted in device manager
but they are enabled and running. In control panelsounds...properties
shows no devices. How does one start a driver?

I think I need to learn a bit more before I start changing things in m
registry. If you really knew nothing about your computer where woul
you begin if you wanted to start going deeper into it? I woul
eventually like to have a computer dedicated to digital recording i
my studio. The recording system I installed is in a home computer tha
I share and is the begining of learning more. Thanks for you
expertice.

The drivers can also be started by another application that starts at
boot time. Did you remove or disable the software that came bundled
with the old soundcard? How about the manufacturer's support site for
your new device or software, any installation help available there?

I disabled the driver that came bundled with the old sound card before
installing the new sound card per instruction. I follow the
manufacturer's troubleshooting info till I get to selecting the
appropriate card via the control panel. At that point there is no
devices detected for playback, recording, mixer and midi. But the
drivers are installed and working in device manager, no red X's or any
other sign that might indicate there is a problem. However in device
manager under the sound card's properties tab (for both cards) the
status is "Driver enabled but has not been started". Your earlier reply
about the registry seems to be the closest to the problem that I've
encountered. I just don't have the skills to go there.

Did you go in the Device Manager or in the Control Panel "Add/Remove
Hardware and tell Windows to remove the old sound card? Did you then
physically remove the old sound card from the computer before installing
the new one? You should also remove or disable ALL software that was
installed with the old sound card. If I understand your problem
correctly the old sound card drivers are preventing the successful
installation of the new card?
