How to speed up email leaving my outbox?

I have noticed when I click "send" that my emails (outgoing) will sit in my
outbox for anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds before they actually leave (or are
sent). I am used to clicking send and they go automatically! . If you
need to know I have Windows XP and Office 2003.

How and where does one go to speed up the outgoing messages sitting in my
outbox?

Can someone please help

Depends on your account type. If you are using an Exchange account they will
be send instantly to the Exchange server (over your LAN) and Exchange will
deal with the more slowly uplink to the ISP. For other account types Outlook
needs to upload it to the ISP so depending on your upload speed could take a
while. A virus scanner that integrates with Outlook and does outgoing mail
scan could even further delay this process.
