I don't use Windows Messenger, though once in awhile my teenaged son has
used it on my PC. It signs in automatically everytime I go into Outlook
Express to check my email even though I have it marked not to in the
Options menu. I get tired of instant messages from his friends popping up
while I'm on my computer -- sometimes when I haven't even opened OE!

What's up with this, and is there any way to remove or deactivate it??

In Windows Messenger, go Tools-> Options -> Preferences->deselect "Run this
program when Windows starts", also deselect "Allow this program to run in
the background".

Hope this helps.

To completely remove Windows Messenger

in the Start/Run menu, copy and paste

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

and ok the OCX error, then reset ya machine, it won't be there then, also if
you decide to get it again, get MSN Messenger (V6.2 I think is the latest
version), it is much better than Windows Messenger

Hope that might help also.. :)

Remove all passwords from the Related Tasks section of a window in the
Control Panel/User Accounts/Account that you are logged into XP as
(??!!). Manage Network passwords is where you can remove them. 4.7 does
not un-install well at all (I have tried). 4.7 stores the passwords so
auto logon can happen. Remove them, problem fixed. MSN will still work,
you just have to enter the password(s) everytime.

This simple tip came from the MSN group at Microsoft.com.

Hi,

Prevent Windows Messenger from Running on a Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089

Disable/Remove Windows Messenger: from Doug Knox
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm

If you prefer to remove Windows Messenger manually, click Start, Run and enter the following command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Note: This will cause a long delay when opening Outlook Express if you have the Contacts pane enabled. To prevent this, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Right click in the right pane and select New, Dword value. Give it the name Hide Messenger Double click this new entry and set the value to 2.
