How to set default action for double click on Folder type that got altered somehow

M

ms

I followed the instructions on the Microsoft site (somewhere, i could search
and find it again) to add an action to produce a printed directory listing.
It works fine, by providing a right click action for the File Folder
filetype. This used the Tools | Folder Options | Filetype tab | advanced
button, to edit actions for filetypes.

A side effect was that I found that instead of "open" being the default
action when I double click on a folder, now the default is "Search". I can
see that if I can get the "Open" action into the list (Tools | Folder
Options | Filetype tab, advanced button, to edit actions) I can set it as
default, but I only see Search, Open in Ember (a picture viewer program),
and the new Print Directory Listing, and nothing else.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hello,

I suggest you first try this:
[Start] | Run | regsvr32 /i shell32 [OK]

If this does not solve the problem then
I suggest you visit MS-MVP Kelly's website at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note the instructions at the top of the page,
then scroll down to line 18,
(Search Opens When Double Clicking A Folder)

Right-click the hyperlink, then click | Save Target As |
to download the file, "folderopenssearch.reg",
then double-click the file and follow the prompts.

That did it! Thanks.

A supplementary question:

If in explorer I do Tools | Folder Options | Filetype tab, select File Type
File Folder, click Advanced button.

I can then select an action from the box, and have buttons to do "New...",
"Edit...", "Remove", "Set Default".

I want to edit my new action "Print Directory Listing" but when I select
this action (or any other) the Edit and Remove options remain greyed out.

Any ideas?

Type regedit in Start - Run, navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell and just look about. The entries here apply to all folders, real ones (aka File Folder or Directory) and Virtual ones (like Control Panel, Network Neighbourhood). The default value of the shell key is the subkey that is default for folders.

Now go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell. On file folders (the display name for directory) as standard the default action is the word "none" which means take the default from Folders entry. You can put the name of the sub key here to change the default for file folders.

There is a bug in the filetypes dialog. It does what previous Windows does - great but MS changed the rules and noone told that dialog. It removes the default value from this key (correct for earlier windows) but in XP it forces it to the default handling for choosing verbs. Typing regsvr32 etc just puts the none word back.

The same entries in file folders over rides the entries in folders. Dissimilar entries are added.

Changing the "File Folders" option via user interface creates this problem
(search becomes default). Edit the registry as David said.
