How to see what archived EXE file contains

J

John Ross

There are some exe files that are actually archived zip or rar files. Some
of them can be seen and expanded by winrar or winzip. There are other that
the only way to see the files inside is to install the application.

I have 2 questions:
1. How can I expand that exe files WITHOUT installing the application.
2. Some of the files that I can expand are containng DATA.zip that when I am
tring to see what is inside of them I am getting message that they are not
archives???

I need this sometime when I have missing some files missing so I don't need
to reinstall the application again and reset my settings.

Here's a method that may work.
Set a restore point. Delete *or* move all the files and
folders in the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_ID\Local Settings\Temp\

Open the application in question. Asssuming it needs to pause and
ask for install directory, etc, check the temp folder above
and see if it created it's install folder.

Not sure about data.zip.

Use system restore to revert if necessary.

You are right, but I heard that there is an easier way - some kind of
program?

Try filealyzer from www.safer-networking.org. These are the same folks who
give us Spybot Search and Destroy. You may have to wait a while to get onto
their site as they are swamped right now.
