how to save files when upgrading

How do I go about looking and saving files and info on my
computer before I upgrade from windows 98se to windows xp?
I'm afraid I will miss something and it'll be lost.

save everything you can not re-create.
data files....favorites....backups....
anything you have on cd like programs or games that can
be reloaded do not save.
