How to repair Windows 2000

Hello all, I have to repair some corrupt files in Windows.
When I chose the 'Repair existing windows 2000
installation' from the Windows CD starting menu it offered
me two choices, recovery console and emergency repair. I
don't know the difference between the two, but chose
recovery console anyway. It then displayed a line like this:

1:c:\winnt

and asked me to log into the Windows 2000 installation. I
type the number '1' and it asked me to type the
administrator password, which I did. The program then just
displayed the line 1:c:\winnt and did nothing. Had I done
anything wrong? Thanks!

That is how Recovery Console works. It takes you to a command prompt
where you can run about 12 different commands. But for fixing corrupt
files what you need to do is choose Emergency Repair then select Manual
Repair and then have Inspect System Files checked and Windows will
repair some core files.
