How to remove uninstalled program names?

R

Ray

I have discovered a program listed in the Add/Remove column which is no longer
installed but the name is still there and will not remove.
Is there a way to do that?

The old version of TweakUI would do it but the new version won't.

Yes, you can remove programs from that list.:

1. Start / Run --> regedit (then ENTER)
2. Search this.:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Uninstall

3. Remove the programs' folder, so those won't appear in the list.

Hi Ray,

If it was properly uninstalled (and not just deleted), then start/run
regedit and go to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Locate the subkey below this one that corresponds to this program and delete
just that subkey.

Ray,

You may either clear the invalid entries manually by editing the registry (or) download iolo technology's System Mechanic (www.iolo.com). It is a nice utility using which you can clear the invalid Add/Remove entries.

To remove the invalid/orphaned entries from the Add/Remove applet manually [Windows 2000/XP]

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
4. Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file.
5. Look for the name of the program with the orphaned entry.
6. Delete the entire listing for the software with the orphaned entry.
7. Close the registry editor.
8. Restart your computer.

Use regedit.exe
Open to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
And each item has its own Subkey, which you can delete - it may help to
do an Edit - find from that point, looking in Data only for a part of
the 'Display name' you see in the Add/Remove window
