How to remove old Network card

Guest

I've had this happen numerous times in Windows. I'm using Windows XP Pro and
I just replaced my old Linksys 10/100 nic with a new gigabit 10/100/1000 nic.
Here's the problem:

When I go to the new nic and enter my private ip for this pc on my lan
192.168.1.x Windows gives me that error that another nic already is using
that ip address...do you want to change the ip. No I don't...I need that ip.

So, since I have removed that old nic and it's not showing up anywhere that
I can find...why is Windows remembering it and how can I delete it for good
so Windows will stop thinking I have two nic's with the same ip?

Thanks!

Did you physically remove the old NIC from the computer without
telling Windows that you were doing it? If so:

1. If you installed the new NIC in the same slot as the old one:

a. Go to Device Manager and un-install the new NIC.
b. Power down and physically remove the new NIC.

2. Physically insert the old NIC in the same slot as before.

3. Boot the computer so that it installs the old NIC.

4. Go to Device Manager and un-install the old NIC.

5. Power down and physically remove the old NIC.

6. If you un-installed the new NIC in #1, re-install it.

So, there's no way to remove the old nic inside Windows without putting the
old card back in the pc?

Yes, there is.
Have a read of this:

Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not
Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315539

You might like to use this article to force Device Manager to show the
nonpresent devices.
The nonpresent ghosts should now reveal themselves.
You could then delete the nonpresent network adapter from device manager.

You may wish to try going into device manager, click on view and select
"show hidden devices" - sometimes hardware that isn't physically connected
will show up when "show hidden" is selected. If so, then just right click
and select remove the device.
