How to remove "My Computer", Network and other icons from desktop?

In WinXP there are configuration settings to get rid of the "My
Computer", "My Network Places" and "My Documents" links from the
desktop, but I cannot find how to do this in Win2000.

Is there a hidden place where this can be done?

I am preparing a Win2000 PC for my mother and I want to keep the
clutter on the desktop away as much as possible. Ideally she would
only need an Email, the Internet Explorer and a Connect to Internet
icon on the desktop. I want to remove all other non-needed links.
