How to remove Internet Explorer shortcut from Quick Launch bar withMandatory User Profile

B

Barry Koopersmith

I have a group of users who use Mandatory User Profiles located on a
network directory on a Windows 2000 server. Each of these users has that
profile location stored in their Active Directory settings. This group
of users also has a Group Policy defined.

I have three different Windows 2000 Professional "ghost" images for
three different computer models. The first two sets of computers do not
have the following problem. With the third computer image (which was
updated using all the latest Windows 2000 patches and updates as of a
few days ago), whenever a new user logs into a computer, an "Internet
Explorer" shortcut appears on the "Desktop" and on the "Quick Launch"
bar (even though I created a typical user without these shortcuts and
copied that user's profile to the "Default User". If a user who is not
configured to use a Mandatory User Profile logs in, the first time he
logs in, he gets those two shortcuts (but they can be deleted and they
do not return if the user logs out and in again). If a user who is
configured to use a Mandatory User Profile logs in, every time he logs
in, he gets those two shortcuts (even if he deletes them but that is
expected since the Mandatory User Profile is copied to the local
computer whenever the user logs in wiping out any changes he made).
Neither the "Desktop" folder nor the "Quick Launch" folder in the
Mandatory User Profile (and not in those directories either under "All
Users" on the local computer) contains the "Internet Explorer" shortcut.
There is something on this computer image that is adding these shortcuts
after a new user logs in.

As a workaround, I can use Group Policy to hide the "Internet Explorer"
shortcut from the "Desktop" and I can modify the Mandatory User Profile
to not show the "Quick Launch" bar at all.

These are my questions:

How can I prevent "Internet Explorer" shortcuts from automatically being
placed on the "Desktop" and on the "Quick Launch" bar for every new
user?

Is there a Group Policy setting that can hide (or remove) the "Internet
Explorer" shortcut from the "Quick Launch" bar?

Is there a Group Policy setting that can hide the entire "Quick Launch"
bar?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

I think there is an option in the group policy to hide.
But I am not sure that it will hide the Quick Launch. You
can create a bat file to remove it when user logs on to
the computer. I used to write script to delete it.
BTW u can not uninstall IE You can only remove the shoutcut
Hope it help!
thanks,
