how to remove Inbox headers whose messages are deleted on server

I have some headers in my Inbox whose messages no longer exist. They were
deleted directly on the server after the headers were downloaded. Now I
cannot get rid of those headers. They cannot be deleted unless the original
messages are found on the server. What can I do?
 
Thanks, but the messages are from a POP server. I don't have an option to
purge. Any other ideas?
