Purging Message Headers not on Server

Have Outlook 2003 and (I think) use POP3 and have set Send/Receive to
download headers only (and thereafter to delete msga from server) .
Suddenly, with no setup changes by me, about 100 spam msgs were correctly
deleted from the server but Outlook failed to delete them from my Inbox.

Now I can't delete them from my Inbox. Nor (in case I was using IMAP) does
my Outlook 2003 Edit contain a Purge menu (not is it available via Customise).

What do I do as my inbox is slowly filling up with unpurgable message
headers (all with a line through them). I have also done a successful Detect
and Repair. Nothing seems to get rid of these unwanted message headers

If you see a line through the items, really sounds like you're using IMAP.
POP doesn't work that way. You can check your account settings easily enough
in tools | e-mail accounts | view/modify ... | next.
You're sure you don't see Purge Deleted Items in your Edit menu, and you've
expanded the full menu?

Honest; full EDIT menu expanded and no Purge item on List. So it's IMAP!
And have been through Customise to check Purge wasn't hiding there; it
wasn't! Won't be able to reply to any further tip for 5 days but assure you
of my great interest in how to solve it! At present I now have over 200
items awaiting deletion frommy inbox, on top of all my other old emails. The
list just keeps growing; I have runa full virus check in case without a
problem.
