Outlook 2003 Missing Purge Menu Item

My Inbox has approx 400 'deleted' (presumably) IMAP email headers caused by a
problem at my ISP mailserver; these items have been deleted from the server
but not from my inbox (where they have a line through them). A Send/Receive
action simply leaves them there with a line through them and a ISP error msg
saying 'Can't complete action as items not on server.

How do I get rid of them. My Outlook 2003 SP1 EDIT menu does NOT contain a
Purge item, and I cannot add it via Customise.

TIA

Do you have an IMAP folder highlighted in your folder tree when you check
the Edit menu?

you've probably hit the nail on the head! I just have an Inbox (and other
standard Outlook folders) in my folder tree. I have no way of knowing
whether that inbox is IMAP; someone on this forum previously suggested it was
IMAP because my headers had lines through them (after selecting to delete
them rather than download them). Then that thread went dead so no further
advice.

I higlight my inbox before looking for EDIT/Purge. AFAIK my mail is a POP3
account; perhaps the Purge facility is IMAP only? In which case, how does
one delete POP3 headers which are now longer on the server!
