How to remove dual boot

My system was set up as follows:
Master HD: Windows ME
Slave HD: Windows XP Professional

The slave died today. When I power up, I get the menu asking which
operating system I want to use. I choose ME, but can only get into Safe
Mode.

The manufacturer is sending me a new HD, which I'll set up all over again
after it arrives. Meanwhile, I need to use my computer. Is it possible to
make it
single-boot again?

Thanks in advance,
Isidore

If you are able to boot in Safe Mode your drive is not
dead but rather its configuration (Windows ME).

My advice is: do not throw your drive away or send it to
me by FEDEX.

Change the jumper on the drive to be the Single Master
drive, for this most drives have a diagram on it
(sticker) with instructions.

Well, seeing that he said his slave drive died (the one that had Windows XP
installed) and he's able to boot into safe mode on ME, I'm sure he'll be
glad to FEDEX his dead drive to you as long as you're able to send him money
for the shipping costs and another dead or working drive that's the same
model for him to send back for the RMA.

If his slave drive had XP on it and he can boot into safe mode on ME, why
does that mean that the drive is not dead?

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

That isn't going to help.. The ME is being booted anyway, so you have
gone past that point and is only giving you safe mode. ONe way to get
back to a simple direct boot is to boot the ME startup floppy and from
it give
SYS C:

What I would hen do *first* is in the ME Safe mode, ensure you can see
hidden files, then edit C:\MSDOS.SYS with notepad. If there is a line
BootFailSafe=
delete it. Do not make any other changes. See if you can now reboot
and get ME normal mode.

If that is not it you will probably have to run the setup of the ME
again - but first ask in the ME groups, eg
microsoft.public.windowsme.general
