How to remove AVG

M

magineer02

Download the 32-bit AVG removal tool, and save it to your desktop or

download folder:

http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x86_2011_1322.exe

Then run the tool, follow the directions, and reboot when prompted.

See if it removes the folder after you reboot. If not, I'll give you a

different tool to try, for deleting the folder.

Hi Glen,

I downloaded the program and ran it but it didn't seem like it did anything except to generate a scrolling data page. I tried it three times with the same results.

I typed those things in after looking for AVG Secure Search. I realize
you did not tell to me to try other search options but I was just
letting you know that I did because the one I had choosen isn't
enabled which is why I have Bing.

Robert

OK.... you mean you typed them in the Manage Search Engines dialog in
Firefox, looking for another search engine. There's always Google if
you don't like Bing.... did you type Google in?

Hi Glen,

Apparently, the current version of the removal tool just closes when
done if it doesn't find anything to remove. Otherwise it usually pops
up telling you to reboot. It creates a long log file in the same folder
as where the removal tool is.... if you downloaded it to, and ran it
from, your desktop.... then the log file will be there. It's called
avgremover.log, it opens in Notepad, and it will probably just show a
lot of "not found", "not installed" and "failed to delete" messages. If
that's the case, the folder is probably still there... did you look?

If it is, the simplest way to remove it may be to use the Unlocker
freeware, but you could first try booting to Safe Mode and deleting it
from there.

Yes, that's correct. Sorry if I confused you initially, it wasn't intentional. No I didn't type in Google as I don't like it either. If I had my choice it would be Dogpile as it searches 17 search engines at once but it has tracking cookies whereas DuckDuckGo and Ixquick don't as I understand it.

Yes I did look and the log file is there and the AVG Secure Search folder is still there.

I think one of the problems I may be having is that the person who helped me changed everything around to set it up like he had his computer set up e.g. My Documents are now in Documents and Settings. The reason I say this isthat I've already deleted Blarc, and the other programs I asked you about earlier via Add/Remove programs but when searching for the AVG removal.exe and log file I saw their folders along with the AVG Secure Search.

I'll try going into Safe Mode and see if I can delete it.

I went into Safe Mode and was able to delete it! I then checked afterwards and it's gone.

Many Thanks,

Hey, I'm easy to confuse!
In that case, your best bet is to leave Bing as default, and just don't
use it.... bookmark your favorite search sites and/or make one of them
your home page. It sounds like that is what you have done already.

Glen,

You won't believe this but I went to the Administrator side to update things and to remove Malwarebytes since I don't use it and already have Avast. So after removing it I checked the folders to make sure it was gone but AVG Secure Search was back!

How could this happen????

In any case, I went back into Safe mode with Networking and deleted again.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Everything I and others have been telling you to do, must be done from
your Administrative account, NOT from your Limited User Account.

Log into the Administrative account.
Click Start> Run, type:
msconfig
Click OK

In msconfig, click the Startup tab at the top.

On the Startup tab, you will probably see an item named VProtect, which
points to vprot.exe in the Secure Search folder.

UNCHECK the box for the VProtect startup item, along with any other
startup items that reference AVG.

Click OK, and restart the computer when prompted.

Log into the Administrative account. A box will appear stating that you
have used the System Configuration utility to alter the startup
programs. In the corner of that box is a check box you can use to tell
it not to show you this message again.... do that.

You should now be able to delete the Secure Search folder.

I have been going to the Administrators Account for all your instructions. The only time I used my User Account was when I changed it temporarily to an Administrators Account because I remembered that the person who was helping did so several times and thought there might be duplicated AVG programs residing there and there were and so I disabled them and ten switched it back to a User Account.

I followed your instructions and was able to delete the AVG Secure Search.

Many Thanks,
Robert

As I stated earlier I think some of my problems/issues are the duplicationsand the mickey mouse way he reorganized my folders/files.

In passing I noticed that My HD usage is way down from 17GB to 11GB !!!! Awesome!

Thank you very much for all your good help,
Robert
