How to remove all Frontpage versions and start again with upgrade

G

Guest

I have an upgrade version of FP 2002 and wanted to install it again after a
system crash. All I could find was a copy of FP98 so I installed that on XP
then installed FP2002.
I then installed IIS 5 and server extentions.
When I start FP and try to create a web I get http://<no-host>/myweb.
I have tried to uninstall everything and start again but cannot seem to
clear out FP98 and probably the PWS, (which I did not install but appears to
be there)

Can anyone offer me advice on clearing everything out, PWS, IIS, FP98,
FP2002 and starting again.
I must have IIS 5 and FP 2002 running real quick.

Thanks

1. On the FP98 CD, there is a folder that has instructions for upgrading the PWS, but the
instructions also tell you how to remove the PWS.

2. The best option is to reformat your HD, install Windows XP Pro, then IIS and FP extensions, then
install FP2002, when prompted for a qualify product to upgrade from, replace the FP2002 CD with the
FP98 CD, then point the dialog to your CD drive, then put your FP2002 CD back in and continue with
the installation.

There is a way to disable / remove PWS from your machine. However it requires configuring the
machine to show hidden devices in Device manager ( fairly easy ) and then removing the PWS entry
from the normally hidden "Non Plug and Play Devices" section. ( also easy )

If you want to try it post back and I'll post the instructions.

However be advised this is not a "Microsoft " recommended procedure, and I accept no reasonability
if you wind up having to reformat and reinstall anyway.

That said, I made the same mistake on a Windows 2K Pro machine and used this procedure to "fix" it.

I'll put it here for everyone to see.
The reason it's done this way is because XP and 2K install / see PWS as a Device

Uninstall IIS.
Open a command window by clicking Start > Run > type: cmd and click OK
Enter the following exactly as you see it here:
SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
and press enter.

Reboot.

Go to control panel, double click computer management and then double click component services.
Click Services and see if there is an entry for PWS and if so right click it and then scroll to "all
tasks" and select Stop.
When it stops close the panel.
Go back to control panel and double click Add/Remove hardware.
In the next panel select "Uninstall a Device" and click Next.
In the next panel check the box "Show hidden devices" and the list will expand. Scroll down the list
and search for PWS or Personal Web server, if found click once to select it and then click Next.
When it is done uninstalling Close the control panel and reboot.
( Do *not* arbitrarily remove anything with a question mark, because that is not it )
If not found here, click Cancel.

"If" PWS does not show using the above method, right click My Computer, click Properties, click the
Device Manager button and when it opens, click View, and select "Show hidden devices"
Then click the plus sign by "Non-Plug and Play Drivers."
When the list expands, scroll down and find PWS ( or Personal Web Server ) right click and select
Uninstall.
When it's done, close Device Manager, restart the machine and reinstall IIS.

Good luck.

I would Add/Remove programs to get rid of FP2002; then start the FP2002 install
over again (do not install 98 first). Since it is the upgrade, it will ask for
the qualifying product disk (i.e. FP98) so just insert that CD when asked for it.
it will check it briefly, then resume with the FP2002 installation, therefore you
won't have the problem with the FP98 Personal Web Server etc....

Then I suggest you uninstall/reinstall IIS as well.

Once PWS is installed, ( by mistake ) Add/Remove programs will *not* remove it because W2K and XP do
not see it as a program, they see it as a Non-Plug and Play Driver.

It *must* be removed via Add/Remove Hardware and / or Device Manager.
