How to remove a running process that gives you "access denied" when you try to kill it

Everytime I start up my Win2000, GoogleUpdate.ex is in my list of processes
running. I try to terminate it, but I get the error message:

Unable to Terminate Process
The operation could not be completed
Access is denied

There are also other processes that won't let me remove them, even when I
find them in the list of Services and try to set them to "disable". I get
this "Access is denied" message.

This, of course, is infuriating because someone other than myself is
controlling what I do with my computer.

Can someone show me how to permanently terminate these errant processes.

ps...I know that I can go into a program and uncheck its option to load when
the computer starts, but some programs (ie, anti-virus programs) don't give
you that option. I also don't know where this GoogleUpdate.ex came
from...but I'm trying to find out the permanent way to stop this intrusion
from occuring whenever it may happen in the future.

I am the only user on my computer, and I'm the administrator in every
profile I have except for the guest profile (which I never use).

Thanks for the links, they got me looking and I found I had a Googleupdate
plugin which I disabled. That stopped that particular problem.

But the larger question is how to get rid of processes that deny me access
even when I'm the administrator. It has to do with permissions, and I once
tried to figure that out (but have since forgotten what I did) and was
blocked even there. I'd really like to get to the bottom of that so if you
have any references you can point me to, it would help a lot.

I'll try that, but actually the "access denied" that I'm trying to get past
were deliberately set up by an antivirus program (Avast, in this case), to
force the user to always have their various "services" running automatically
at all times. I get the "access denied" when I try to change the services
from automatic to manual. Also when I try to "end task" the Avast processes
that are always running.

So in ths case I don't think it's my machine that's been compromised. But
my permission to change or end these certain tasks has been compromised. I
don't have this problem with most other services that I try to reset, or
processes that I "end task".

Ok, now that's new information and about a different service. Have you tried
uninstalling it?
