How to remote control 2000 from XP?

Win2000 comes with 2 remote connections for admin purposes, but when I try
to connect from XP 'Remote desktop connection' it says the client could not
connect.

There seems to be no obvious reason why not so I'm wondering if the XP
client has to be in the same domain (it's in a workgroup at the moment)?

There is an obvious reason: Only WinXP Professional
and Windows Servers can act as Remote Desktop hosts.
For other OSs you must use a third-party product, e.g.
WinVNC.

the win2000 is a server, but the XP is the home version. I take it that
means it would only work if I upgraded to XP Pro?

You did not say in your first post that Win2000 is a server.

Any Windows machine can act as a remote for a Remote
Desktop session, even a Win98 machine. There is no need
to upgrade to WinXP Professional. You should now take
the time and describe your configuration in detail so that
we can tell you why it does not work. So far you have
provided only a very vague description.
