control win2000 from xp

Win2000 comes with 2 remote connections for admin purposes, but when I try
to connect from XP 'Remote desktop connection' it says the client could not
connect.

There seems to be no obvious reason why not so I'm wondering if the XP
client has to be in the same domain (it's in a workgroup at the moment)?

I do not believe you have correctly identified your issue.

Your client OS should not matter (much) as long as you have a viable client software. Remote Desktop Client in Windows XP Home and/or Windows XP Professional is the same. In fact - if that was your problem (it is not) you could easily download/utilize the Windows 2003 Remote Desktop Client to get around that.

Where can I download the Remote Desktop Connection 5.2 software (the Windows Server 2003 TS client)?

Windows 2000 Server does come with 2 terminal service connections for administration purposes (Windows 2000 Workstation does not have this.) However - this is *not* enabled by default. You need to install/configure this setup..

As far as upgrading to Windows XP Professional - although to be honest, I don't see you needing to do this - you just purchase a Windows XP Professional upgrade/retail license and upgrade your Windows XP Home edition system. Same as any other valid upgrade path.
