How to reinstall Windows after SP2 uprade?

I upgraded my processor from a 3.06GHz 533 MHz FSB to a 3.4GHz 800FSB Pentium
4. I was running on an Intel D865PERL mobo. However I did not first upgrade
the BIOS, therefore the system was unstable after the processor upgrade. I
thought that perhaps I should reinstall Windows XP (I had already installed
the Windows XP SP2 update). I then got errors that the image files on the
computer do not match those on the Windows XP cd. I then installed Windows XP
on another hard drive (EIDE drive) successfully and then flashed the new
BIOS. However I still get the same errors when trying to reinstall on the
SATA HD. I also cannot run the SATA HD at all as the default is to always
boot from a SATA HD and this apparently cannot be changed in the setup. I do
not want to lose my files on the SATA HD. How can I recover the files and get
the SATA HD operating again? Is there a boot CD to use if you have installed
the Windows XP2 SP on the drive...could that be the problem? Thank you for
any help!

If you are wanting top perform a clean installation (as I cannot see any
other installation you would have wanted) then you BOOT from the CD, not put
it in while in Windows.

You could just slipstream SP2 into your current CD and reburn a copy.

or

or google for it..

You could also search the Microsoft web page for the Windows XP Setup
Diskettes.. if that is an option..

Something else you could do is (as I am reading that you have a working XP
right now?) copy the files you want off the SATA HDD onto the current drive
then redo. You may have to take ownership of the files:

It appears that you want to do a Repair Install on your system. Problem is
that your WinXP CD does NOT have SP2 on it and you can't run Repair Install
of an "older version of WinXP" over WinXP SP2.

Two reasonable choice:
- Create a "slipstreamed" version of WinXP. This will give you a bootable
WinXP SP2 CD that you can use to do a Repair Install. NOTE: This assumes
that you have a "real" WinXP CD to work with and it isn't a "Recovery CD".
- You can uninstall SP2 from Control Panel and then do the Repair Install,
subsequently re-install SP2. Problem with this method is that if you ever
have an unbootable system, you will NOT be able to do the SP2 uninstall and
you'll be in a jam.

Another respondent gave you a pointer to how you can create a slipstream
version of WinXP SP2.

I had to use the repair re-install after upgrading tto SP2. Didn't have a
problem running the Win XP CD, however. Now I've got some problems and I'm
sure it's due to the fact that I need to get the SP2 files re-installed.
Anyone know how to get the SP@ installation to happen? Windows Update thinks
I'm up to date, but I'm not. I've only got the base files now.
