how to reinstall dvd drive?

Okay, when I bought this computer I could play dvd's on it

it has been broken for a couple of times and windows xp reinstalled
couple of times as wel

but sindse then, the dvd's don't play anymore. and I am really dum
with computers

can someone please explain, this is the message I get

'you must first install the software that came with your drive. If yo
have already installed this software, it may be experiencing problem
and you may need to reinstall it.

I need to know how to reinstall the dvd driv

The drive itself is enumerated and stored in the registry.
The semi-automated (though still manual) way to remove it is
to delete it from Device Manager. The more manual way is to
hunt it down in the registry. This latter alternative
should not be necessary.

The drive is using ATAPI support native to windows, there is
not a special 'driver' per se as would be installed with a
(sound card or whatever...).

If you can still use the drive to read discs, std data discs
for example, odds are you need as the message suggested- to
install or reinstall a DVD (movie) player software. A DVD
drive only handles DVD format media, it doesn't "know" what
to do with the data on the disc (if a DVD MPEG movie) until
that software is installed and working properly.
