How to recover the lost link in registry when you click "My Comput

D

Dave H.

My computer got infected by W32.Gammima.AG lately. After removing the infected
files and cleaning up the worms. I got a problem that I can not open my local
"C" drive. When I double-click "My Computer" then double-click "Local Disk
(C:)"
a windows popped up and ask me to choose an application to open the C drive.
Before infection the folders under C drive will show up after
double-clicking C:, but
right now it seems C drive is treated as a win32 application. Does anyone know
how to modify the regsitry value to recover this problem? Thanks.

How do you know the machine's clean now?

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

See if the Drive Association fix available from this web site helps.

If you can access a normal, running XP
system, export the keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory

( Microsoft never seems to decide which name they
want to use for folders. Some setting work on Win9x
in the Directory key but in WinXP in the Folder key.)

In any case, those two keys should contain settings
for dealing with folders - how they open and what's
on the context menu.

You can then compare your exported keys with the
existing values on your system. I'm guessing that the
critical key is probably:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shell\open\Command

but I'm not certain about that.
