How to put computer into standby?

I have two Compaq computers, a desktop and a laptop. The desktop's keyboard
bears a Compaq label and includes a set of special purpose buttons to start
up Outlook Express, IE, etc.

One of the desktop keyboard's buttons immediately puts the computer into
standby.
The laptop's keyboard has no such "immediate standby" button.

Is there a Windows command which does this?

If this doesn't work, go to the Control panel and double click Power
Options,
Click the Hibernate tab and place a check mark in the box - Enable
Highbernation.

The OP was asking about the Standby option, which is different from
Hibernate.

Standby simply places the system in a low power state and allows the user to
very quickly bring the system back to full power with everything just as it
was when standby was initiated. If the system is shut down while it is in
standby, all information thgat was not saved at standby, will be lost.

Hibernate saves the current state of the system in memory and then
completely shuts the system down. When you restart the system, hibernate
will bring everything back to the pre-hibernate state, but this takes much
longer.

Thee are no keyboard shortcuts for standby or hibernate. You need third
party utilities to accomplish this.
