Keyboard trouble

I have a 2006 Compaq Presario desktop which includes a Compaq
“enhanced multimedia PS/2 keyboard”. The keyboard includes a set of
buttons which include “standby”, “External Speaker Volume +/”- and
“Mute”, and four other buttons which can be programmed to open IE,
Outlook Express, etc..

For a number of years, these buttons behaved normally. But somewhere
along the line these buttons stopped functioning. All other “normal”
keys (F1-F12, the letter and number pad, Alt-Ctrl, arrows, etc.. )
behave normally.

I checked Control Panel | Keyboard, and am informed that the device is
working properly.

Is there some place I might have disabled the device?
