how to paste from Word to Outlook email and not lose formatting

When I copy and paste a Word file to an Outlook email I lose the formatting.
It no longer looks like the original. I am trying to send a resume using
this method.
What should I be doing if I don't want to retype the whole document?
 
Some alternatives:
attach the Word file and all formatting will be preserved. this would be the
standard method for sending such a document.

Open the document in Word and send it using the Email icon on the standard
toolbar.
