how to open files in same window

Hi

I'm not sure if this is a Windows XP issue but having checked in Help and
Support I'm not sure where else to look.

Since reformatting my PC, files for the same program open in new windows -
for example opening 4 Word documents will open in 4 windows whereas before
they would open in one with an indication that there were 4 open documents.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

Maybe you installed a newer version of Word when you "reformatted"
your computer?

That's the way Word has worked for the last few versions. It doesn't
use the MDI interface anymore, for better or for worse each document
appears in a separate window.

Hi Tim

Thanks for this.

All the software is exactly the same as it was before the reformat - just
reinstalled from my original Windows XP Home/ Office 2003 Small Business CDs.
That's what's so puzzling.

My work often involves opening many Word documents in a day (today it was
60+!)- but even more aggravating is the prolifieration of Internet Explorer
windows! It seems to apply to all programs and just makes for a messy taskbar!

I'm really just looking to recreate what I had before the reformat which
worked really well!

Not sure what MDI is - but I used to have individual Word/
Publisher/IE/FrontPage "things"(icons?) on the taskbar that I could click on
and get a pop-up list of open documents and go straight to the one I wanted/

Thanks again

from a happily reformatted and less prone to crashing computer!

Hi

Yes - from its original Office 2003 CD. The problem is not just Word - that
was an example... It seems to apply to all progams - including Word - and
Internet Explorer... as you can imagine it's easy to get many webpages on the
taskbar!

A bit of a nuisance!

Thanks for the thought

Multiple Document Interface. Allows you to have multiple windows
within your main application window, each with a different document.

That may be something different. Right-click an empty part of the
taskbar, and choose "Properties". On the "Taskbar" tab of the dialog
box, look for the box labeled "Group similar taskbar buttons". Make
sure it's checked, then click "OK". Does your taskbar work the way you
want it to now?

Ah-HA! You mean the TASKBAR, not windows. See Tim's reply about "group
similar buttons" in taskbar Properties.
