How to move between side by side columns

I have a question about moving between two columns in Word 2002 SP3.
My wife created a Word page with two colums, a narrow column on the left and
rest of the page on the right. Now, she would like to move indepently between
the columns. She would like to put like a date on the left column and move
then to the column on the right on the same line of the document. I have not
been figure out for her how to change to the next column on the same line. I
know if I "tab" the first column through and then the cursor will move over
to the next column, but that is not convinient to do. Any way of doing this
or any other advise?

Your wife could insert the data in a 2-column table instead of ordinary
columns and add a new row each time she wants to add a new “type†of
information. Table cells in the same row will always be aligned, also if you
add more data in one or more cells above.
