how to mark mail as read

i must have inadvertently changed a setting. i used to open an email
and when i closed it the icon changed to reflect that the email had
been read, now the unread icon remains even after i open the email.
where is the toggle for this.....tia

could it be certain emails? i just tried an unread one from the
deleted folder and it worked normally, i even moved it to the inbox
and it worked as advertised.
