How to make WinXP talk over NetBeui ?

T

Tim Roberson

Can someone help with what I hope is a fairly straightforward problem,
ie. Making Windows XP talk to another machine using the NetBeui
protocol.

The (non-essential) background to this is that, being fairly lazy by
nature, I thought it would be easier to install NetBeui on my XP box
rather than create a new GHOST boot diskette, which at the time, was
only configured for NetBeui. I've since dumped this idea, and have
gone over to a TCP/IP diskette, however I'm still puzzled as to why
this didn't work.

As a test, I've got two PCs connected directly over a crossover cable.
One box is NT4, the other is XP pro. Both have NetBeui installed and
have identical NICs:

TEST (1) I can take my old Netbeui boot-diskette, boot the XP machine
into DOS and happily map drives to the NT4 box. However, when I boot
the NT4 box using the same diskette and try to map to the XP box, it
fails.

TEST (2) Booting both machines into windows, I removed TCP/IP from the
XP machine in an attempt to force it to talk to NT4 over NetBeui. I
now unable to browse to the adjacent PC, either in Network
Neighbourhood, or by mapping directly to a share on the other PC.

As I've now gone over to TCP/IP, this is more about retaining my
sanity rather than any real need to get it working. Here's hoping
someone will put me out of my misery by telling me I'm doing something
fundamentally wrong.

Install NetBEUI on XP as shown here, following each step exactly as
shown. If you don't, it might appear to install, but it won't work:

Look in Event Viewer to see if there are any error messages related to
NetBEUI. To run it, click Start | Control Panel | Performance and
Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. For more
information, see:
