Netbeui?

A network of about 10 computers is acting very strange.
It is a mixed bag of 98SE, 2000 and XP/Home/Pro.

If you go to different computers on the network and look at the Network
Neighborhood.... different computers show different connections and
shared resources. I have not been successful in getting all the
computers to show for the workgroup (the workgroup is the same for all
of them - verified and re-verified)
Plus, when a Shared folder is set up on an XP machine the folder is
there on the network but access is denied.... "See the
administrator...." message. Nothing exotic about this folder - just
shared for R/W.

Besides TCP/IP, some of them have Netbeui installed. DID I read
somewhere that ALL the computers must have all the exact same protocols
installed?
Will removing Netbeui and only leaving TCP/IP clear up this mess?

Regards,
Frank

Frank,

I think you are answering your own questions. You are almost correct, anyway.
1) All computers on the LAN should have the exact same protocols installed.
2) If there is no underlying problem, removing NetBEUI and leaving TCP/IP on
all computers will help clear up the mess.

At any rate, if there is another problem not yet identified, normalising the
protocols on all computers is an essential step in identifying any additional
problem.

With your mixed bag of computers, you still face a challenge.

Choose EITHER Netbeui OR TCP/IP as it is entirely possible that one computer
will attempt to hook on to another using one and do it and yet others will
use the other thus no-one sees everything. Choose which protocol you want to
use and remove the other. The best idea is to remove Netbeui but if you
don't want to do that, then remove tcp/ip.
