Windows Networking Protocols and Port

Dear Experts,

Since XP does not use NETBEUI, therefore TCP/IP is quite a common protocol
to be used in Windows Networking.

However, for some reasons after installing some firewalls software such as
NIS2007, one might not be able to view all computers NETBIOS name in the
"View Workgroup computer"
Note : I am referring this on peer to peer networking only.

Does anyone know specifically what other protocols, services or ports that
is require to be configure in the Firewall policies in order for one to view
the computer Netbios name in the workgroup?

My understanding is to configure the firewall to allow communication to &
fro for all TCP & UDP traffic within the network. Is there a more specific or
secure configuration where I only allow certain ports or services rather
than allowing all TCP & UDP ports in order to view computers in workgroup
computers?

Thanks

Dear Chuck

Thanks for the link.
I am correct to presume that by opening port 137 to 139 & 445 TCP & UDP in
Firewall, this will allow me to see workstations name in My Network Places
based in a workgroup peer to peer network?

If you Enable NetBT (which really should read "SMBs over NetBT"), you enable 137
- 139. If you do NOT Enable NetBT, or if your DHCP server should Disable NetBT
(which really should read "SMBs directly hosted over IP"), you enable 445.

You need to be consistent with your NetBT setting, and either Enable or Disable
on all computers, in peer to peer networks.

Alvyn,

If the problem (which we haven't yet established) is related solely to the
firewall, then opening both 137 - 139, and 445, TCP/UDP, will resolve that
problem.

But remember to be consistent with NetBT, and with the browser infrastructure.
