How to make the Windows Media audio to play in Windows XP SP2?

D

Dmitry Kopnichev

I have been in contact with the Russian support. They said to uninstall SP2
to play audio in the encyclopedia.
WMP plays wave, CDs, mp3 and midi fine.
I am running the encyclopedia from a DVD on my Windows XP SP2. The
encyclopedia played audio while running from the DVD and a HDD on another
Windows XP Home.

Because Windows XP SP2 has added security features to
protect the computer environment (cyberspace) from the evil
people out there who have nothing better to do than write
viruses. The program you want to use does not conform to
the new "standard" and you'll have to set an exception (see
my other posts on Data Execution Protection).

The author of the encyclopedia program should re-write their
code so it conforms, Microsoft is not going to remove
security.

| Why is it "a problem with the player built into the
encyclopedia" if the
| encyclopedia plays audio on another Windows XP Home?

I will switch the DEP and see if this helps in today evening on my home
Windows XP SP2.
I will also uninstall Windows Media Tools 4.1, which was installed
automatically at an end of the encyclopedia installation. I refused
installation of the Windows Media Tools 4.1 on the other Windows XP Home.
Here is where you may find your solution, Hope it helps.

|I understand the configuration. This isn't a problem with

There is probably some code in the program or even the audio
file that does not conform to the DEP protocol. Try setting
up the system to not run DEP on that program.
To see the picture I posted, use the magnifier tool, you
should be able to see the path to the correct page to set up
the exception.

I would not run w/o SP2, there are too many former KGB
programmers writing viruses.
And East Germans, and American teens.

I really think DEP is the issue, you might want to call the
MS TechNet pages I posted to the encyclopedia authors. They
can use the info to write their code so it runs under the
new protocols.

I'd try that before I started uninstalling software, I doubt
that the WMT 4.q1 are causing a problem if you are not using
WMP.

Post back with a report, I'd like to know if I helped.

Should I select the encyclopedia executable or the encyclopedia audio player
executable?

D

Dmitry Kopnichev

I will post back.
Jim Macklin said:
I really think DEP is the issue, you might want to call the
MS TechNet pages I posted to the encyclopedia authors. They
can use the info to write their code so it runs under the
new protocols.

I'd try that before I started uninstalling software, I doubt
that the WMT 4.q1 are causing a problem if you are not using
WMP.

Post back with a report, I'd like to know if I helped.

|I will switch the DEP and see if this helps in today

| I will also uninstall Windows Media Tools 4.1, which was
installed

I refused

Dmitry,
Ask support some details.
If they use some kind of Internet-like interface for calling WMP (java
scripts or smth else), then registry editing can help:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown
IExplorer.exe = 0 (zero)

But this will made the system more vulnerable.

J

Jim Macklin

You should set DEP to ignore the encyclopedia program, that
should then include the playing of the files.

I do not know exactly what program(s) are installed as part
of the encyclopedia program to play the data files, so I
can't say exactly which programs to include. Assuming that
the encyclopedia program installs in the C:/Windows/Program
Files folder, you would browse from the DEP window to the
program folder and select "encyclopedia.exe" and that should
cover all those programs. If there are different programs
to run video or audio then select them both. Just be aware
that you would be opening a possible security issue if you
run some infected file.

Why do you think that "they use ... WMP" at all?
Igor Leiko said:
Dmitry,
Ask support some details.
If they use some kind of Internet-like interface for calling WMP (java
scripts or smth else), then registry editing can help:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LocalMachine_Lockdown
IExplorer.exe = 0 (zero)

But this will made the system more vulnerable.

begin Jim Macklin gasped loudly when he suddenly felt one of his two brain cells
You're welcome.

<snip unread drivel>

Still as stoopid as a fresh, steaming pile of cat shit, I see. You had to
reply to a 190 line long post with two ****ing words. Do the world a favor
Jim...stuff a open beer can up your ass and sit over an open fire for about 3
hours, that way we can have 'Drunken Village Idiot' for supper, you worthless
gank. Hell, we might just wrap you up and send you as a food parcel to the
tsunami victims.

Part of the problem in getting this problem answered is that
the subject line would have been more easily understood had
it said something like "Audio won't play after SP2, using
encyclopedia program"
Then the body of the message could have said...
I have an encyclopedia program that uses Windows Media
Audio files. Since updating to SP2 the player built into
the encyclopedia program no longer plays the audio. The
program was written in Russia and it is named (insert name
and link). The program runs fine on machines that do not
have SP2. The files are all on the local hard drive.
What changes does SP2 make that will stop a media file from
playing and how do I correct the issue.

Dmitry is going to make an exception to the DEP security and
post back whether that fixed the problem.

I browsed from the DEP window to the program folder and selected
"cmge04_d.exe". This did not help. The "cmge04_d.exe" is the only executable
in the encyclopedia installation folder.
Jim Macklin said:
You should set DEP to ignore the encyclopedia program, that
should then include the playing of the files.

I do not know exactly what program(s) are installed as part
of the encyclopedia program to play the data files, so I
can't say exactly which programs to include. Assuming that
the encyclopedia program installs in the C:/Windows/Program
Files folder, you would browse from the DEP window to the
program folder and select "encyclopedia.exe" and that should
cover all those programs. If there are different programs
to run video or audio then select them both. Just be aware
that you would be opening a possible security issue if you
run some infected file.

That's too bad, it would have been nice if that had been the
only problem. It also exhausts my ideas at present. I
think it is something along those lines.

You do say you browsed to the installation folder, is that
the folder C:\Windows\Program Files or is that the folder
from which you installed the program? If you double click
on the file "cmge04_d.exe" what happens?

You might be able to examine system event logs and find when
and where the program stop is happening and that might help.
Just as another last thought, have you tried reinstalling
the encyclopedia program again with XP SP2 running?

Jim

That is the folder C:\Windows\Program Files, not from which I installed the
program. If I double click on the file "cmge04_d.exe" the encyclopedia runs.
Yes, I have tried reinstalling the encyclopedia program again with XP SP2
running.
The program did not stop, there is just no sound played.
Why do you think system event logs contain when and where the program stop
is happening?

That's too bad, it would have been nice if that had been the
only problem. It also exhausts my ideas at present. I
think it is something along those lines.

You do say you browsed to the installation folder, is that
the folder C:\Windows\Program Files or is that the folder
from which you installed the program? If you double click
on the file "cmge04_d.exe" what happens?

You might be able to examine system event logs and find when
and where the program stop is happening and that might help.
Just as another last thought, have you tried reinstalling
the encyclopedia program again with XP SP2 running?

Jim

|I browsed from the DEP window to the program folder and
selected
| "cmge04_d.exe". This did not help. The "cmge04_d.exe" is
the only executable
| in the encyclopedia installation folder.
