How to make the Global Address List available in Outlook Address B

J

Jeremy Sage

Apologies because I know this is a problem of my own making but I am really
struggling to resolve it.

On my main client PC, the Global Address List is just not available in my
Outlook Address Book. If I log on to another client then it is there. There
does not seem to be any means of adding it via the Tools - Options menu in
the Address Book or through the main Tools - Email accounts... - Add new
directory or address book menu.

Unfortunately, I think I actually removed it several months ago whilst
trying to follow a tutorial on Outlook, thinking that I do not really use the
Global Address List and I could always add it again later. Unfortunately, now
I need it I cannot remember how I removed it or how to find the tutorial I
was following.

I am running Outlook 2003 on Vista Pro and Exchange on SBS (2003?).

Any help greatly appreciated and apologies for my stupidity.

TIA.

Control panel, Mail - remove the exchange acct and re-add it.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried this (copying all the settings from a
client that works OK) but I get an error when trying to start Outlook saying:
"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact
your administrator if this condition persists."

I did notice in the email accounts that under "Deliver new e-mail to the
following location:" I cannot select the mailbox, I only have options for
Private Folders and Archive Folders. I suspect this may be the problem (or at
least associated with it) but I can't see where I can change it. I did not
choose the "New Outlook Data File..." because I assume that I don't actually
want to create a new file, just use the exchange mailbox.

Can you help restablishing the Exchange account?

Thanks in advance.

Do you perhaps have a firewall on that PC blocking access to the server? This
really is a problem for your local IT support people.

The connection to the server is fine and although there is a firewall, I
can't imagine how this would be causing the problem. Outlook was running
perfectly OK (just no GAL in the address book); I removed and added the
Exchange account (as per the earlier post) and now I have the error message.

All I want to do is reinstate the GAL. Am I being too ambitious? Do I really
need an IT department or Exchange Administrator (as per earlier post) to do
that?

Please, please can someone help me do this. I thought there may have been a
relatively straightforward solution but I will try whatever it takes to
resolve it.

TIA

This means you are not connecting to the exchange server. Are you sure you
have the correct account/server information? Did your name resolve when you
set up the account? Is a firewall enabled on the computer?

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897716 if using ISA firewall.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897716 if using ISA firewall.

The server & account information I am sure is correct and is identical to
that used on another client which is working perfectly. When I enter the
username it resolves and shows the full name underlined.

As far as I know we are not using ISA. The client has Windows Firewall and
as a test I set Outlook as an exception but still the same error. However,
all was working fine before I removed and added the Exchange account; then 2
minutes later not - I would have thought that if it was firewall problems it
would have never worked in the first place.

I am wondering whether it is because I am set up as a mobile user and often
use Outlook offline. Could it be being selective in when it is actually
trying to connect to the server?

Please let me know if there is anything I can try.

The solution is specific to your installation. Ergo, someone who can diagnose
your installation is the most appropriate source for the solution.

Is outlook online now? That is a requirement. (If you are using RPC over
HTTP outside the network its harder to configure too.)

Go into the account - tools, accounts - select the acct and click Change
then More settings. Is outlook set to use offline or cached?

The client PC was online - as Outlook refused to start it is difficult to
say whether Oultook was online or not.

I used the Control Panel - Mail to get to the account settings (as Outlook
won't start I can't use Tools - Accounts) and checked the settings for the
Exchange account. This was set to "Use Cached Exchange Mode" and under more
settings and "When starting" it was NOT set to work offline (I could not see
any other references to being offline other than the location of the offline
files).

When I tried again without cached mode I got the same error as before. (As I
am now at home I am having to connect via the VPN but I am hoping that is OK).

VPN may make it harder to figure out but won't really matter. If outlook
won't connect in classic (non-cached) mode, it means its not talking to the
exchange server. This is probably the same reason the GAL wasn't accessible.

- Outlook was working OK.
- Then I did something stupid (several months ago) and removed the GAL.
- Apart from a lack of the GAL, Outlook still working fine.
- When I needed to use the GAL I could not see how to reinstate it and
posted the original message.
- Outlook still working OK.
- In repsonse to a reply, I removed and re-added the Exchange account.
- Since then, Outlook will not start and comes up with the message
previously posted.

All of the above does not seem consistent with just a failure of the client
not talking to the Exchange server. Either way, I need to get it back working.

I suppose the question has now changed and become one of how do I reinstate
Outlook. Do I need to go to another forum?

Did you make a new profile or are you working in your old profile? it
shouldn't matter, but sometimes it does.

If you use system restore and go back before you removed the exchange
account, you can get that much working... then maybe the guys in the
exchange forum will know how to add the gal back - there are exchange
newsgroups on this server or access it via the web -

System restore managed to get me back to a working system. Unfortunately,
now back to square one.

I assumed it was an Outlook issue rather than Exchange because on a
different client with the same user I can access the GAL no problem. However,
I will try the Exchange forum to see if I can get a solution.

Thanks for your help.
