Hi,

I am getting calls for all over town from
people that got caught by the WGA plug in.
(Editorial comment: now we now why I always loose
bids. Second editorial comment: ha ha ha ha)

Questions: With the legitimate copy of XP in
hand, how do I make the WGA plugin happy? Do I
have to reinstall the entire OS? Will they loose
everything?

With a legit copy, the same flavor (Pro/Home) you do a simple
repair/reinstall over the existing and enter the new key. I just did
this for 20 machines and not one had a problem.

Three follow up questions:

1) Did you boot off the CD or did you stick it
in on a running XP?

2) Did you have any conflicts with post SP2 patches (automatic
updates)?

3) After the install was complete, did you just let automatic update
rip?

Booted from the CD.

All of the computers were XP Prof SP1 initial, upgraded to SP2. I used a
OEM XP Prof with SP2 already in the OEM install, did the standard
repair/install method, and that's all I had to do.

After the install I had a BUNCH of updates to reinstall, but it all
worked without a loss of data, and they were all still connected to the
domain.

But why do a repair install when you can just go download the WGA key
changing tool or a key finder program.. here

WGA Key Changing tool

or

Win Keyfinder 1.70

It will save you some time and effort.

use the key changing prog ...few minutes and you're good to go :>

Leythos,

Why did you not just use the WGA key changing tool or a keyfinder to convert
the windows to a proper key? It would have saved you several hours of labor.

I tried it several times, even hacked the reg myself, and nothing
worked, when I tried to activate windows, or when I used the tool to
enter the new key, Belarc always reported the old key. Since this place
is audited, they use Belarc to determine compliance.

In the 50+ machines I've tried to change the key on, not one of them has
worked, not one. I've always had to do the repair/reinstall method.

I will check out the tools you show, although I've already used them and
several others, hoping there was an update, and see if they work the
next time (two more to do on Friday), and then post back.

Windows XP repair install

When you do a Repair Install you *must* make a manual check with
Windows Update (once) to kick-start the automatic updates. Otherwise
the Windows Update software thinks the machine is up to date because
the download folders and install log files for them are present. If
you do not make a manual check for updates then no automatic updates
will be made until Microsoft releases a new critical update, one that
was not installed on the machine prior to the Repair Install. At that
time it will then catch up on all of the needed updates.

Good luck

I said I would follow-up on my post from Friday - where I had said that
the earlier change tool was not working on any of the machines we use it
on. I'm guessing I must have had an old version as the one I used from
the link above worked perfectly.
