How to load Firefox faster?

I continue to be frustrated by the continuing promises and claims of
firefox, that this version will load faster. On my older, 650Mhz, 126ram
machine, IE still loads almost instantly, whereas firefox 1.5 still takes
some time to load and display.

Is there something extra users like myself can do to increase the
loading speed of firefox?

Firefox is very slow, perhaps the slowest of them all. You might just
keep it loaded all the time and minimize it when not in use. That's
what I do. Also, K-Meleon is there too, and it's much faster to load,
more like IE.

Seconded. IE starts quickly because most of it is already loaded in memory
by the OS. The FF Preloader does this for Firefox so it starts up just as
fast.

Does this work with any version of Firefox? I notice it's about a year
old now.

Works with the latest FF.

Microcrap have been lying to us for years.

IE loads very fast. :-) with a preload of its dll's

If you want the fastest loading programs then I suggest you stay with MIcrojunk.

Lying? It is even documented that the OS is preloading Shdocvw.dll. Being
documented, it cannot possibly be a lie.

I don't know that company. Microjunk? Never heard of it.

I haven't used it either. FWIW, some people have raised some pretty
serious concerns about what it does.

or <http://tinyurl.com/9n4q9>

Prefetching is enabled by default in Firefox.

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/netlib/Link_Prefetching_FAQ.html

As the article you referenced implies, Fasterfox seems to approach the
process too aggressively. Here's another article that suggests the same
and how to control it from a web development perspective.

http://www.edochan.com/programming/pf.htm

It's not prefetching per se that is problematic but how Fasterfox
approaches the process. It's probably a good idea to avoid Fasterfox.
Thanks for the heads up.

Thirded.... a must have for any firefox user...

However it STILL does not load as fast as IE even with the FF preloader.

The difference on my system is not noticeable. Neither IE nor FF
loads as fast as K-Meleon on my system. IE = 2 seconds, FF = 2
seconds, KM = 0.5 seconds.

Another stick of 128RAM and Opera.

The more extensions and themes you have installed, the longer it takes to
load firefox and to open new windows of firefox.

FF is worth waiting on IMO.

No real argument there. But it IS slow... :)
I don't get this. Do you have a lot of extensions installed? I've
used FF since it was Firebird and it has /never/ loaded "slowly" on
any system I've used. Slower than IE? Yes. Slow? What is your
definition of "slow?"

Just leave Firefox open when you're going to use it, what's the problem?
