OT: New Firefox 1.5 is much faster

C

* * Chas

The latest version of Firefox, 1.5 has been available for DL for several
days. It's available from a lot of sites but here's a direct link:

http://www.mozilla.com/

I had just install 1.07 over 1.06 about a week ago and only noticed a
few minor improvements. I've been using IE 5.01 most of the time because
Firefox loaded pages too slow. The new version 1.5 is much faster now
and I'm started using it as my default browser.

BTW, I installed over top of FF 1.06/1.07 without a hitch. Very clean
install program.

example; ieview
And I had a MISERABLE time with it. It was way too slow, and eventually I
went back to 1.0.7. However, it took me several tries to get the new one
totally off this computer. I may have to uninstall 1.0.7 and start fresh.
But I have to admit that I probably caused some of the uninstall problems.

I'm running Win98SE on this system and it seems to be working fine.
Firefox is still a little sluggish launching, 4-5 seconds vs. 1-2
seconds for IE.

Firefox pre-1.0 was really fast too. I'm glad they've corrected that as
you say. I'm too lazy to upgrade. I have to build Firefox from source
and that can take a while. I'll stick with Opera.

He should have said "1.0.7" and 1.0.5.....just a slip. Version 1.5 is the
latest.

You're lucky, then. It's better to uninstall previous versions of FF

Maybe but I have updated it 4 times now just by installing that latest version on top of the
predecessor.

Sorry I wasn't clear in my post. I was running 1.06 and I installed 1.07
on top of it. A few days later I installed 1.5 on top on 1.07.

Both update installations went very smooth. I use an old program called
InCtrl to monitor installations and system changes. Firefox installation
is very clean.

How do they look in the headlights? :)

I have an older version of Opera on 1 or 2 of my systems and it is
amazingly fast. There were some features or bugs that I didn't care for
at the time. I'll have to try a later version some time.

Normally I uninstall programs before I do an update unless there are
instruction to the contrary.

I did it just as an experiment and it worked both times for me. That's
why I reported the results.

Hi Chas,

Assuming you keep InCrtl records as I do, will check something for me.
My InCtrl5 record goofed up for the first time near the end of the new
values section. I got this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Mozilla
Firefox (1.5) "InstallLocation"
Type: REG_SZ
Data: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Mozilla
Firefox (1.5) "NoModify"
Type: REG_DWORD
*ERROR* Access violation at address 0047A034 in module 'INCTRL5.EXE'.
Read of address FFFFFFFF
**********************************************************************************************

How many values listings were missed and did you have this error?

Thanks in advance,

BoB

Poor Figgs.... Is that on he newly generated XP PC ?

As Noel says....Yep. I had a problem when I downloaded it over 1.0.7. Then
botched things up by trying about 4 different things to sort it out.

So last night I removed every instance of FF 1.0.7 (thanks to TomV and his
link) and now have version 1.5 on here. Saved the Profile, but the only
thing it didn't regenerate was my saved Passwords....odd. I have the proper
files in the folder which should have saved them.

Oh well.....sigh.
