How to install Microsoft .NET 3.0

Windows XP Professional with HP Pavillion a1419h. I had to perform
System Recover procedure. After reinstalling XP and Service Pack 3 I was
unable to use a third party software. Installation popup read <requires
Microsoft .NET 3.0 runtime.> Later I read one should install Service Pack 2
before 3 but procedures didn't provide those instructions. I have searched
Microsoft.com for solutions, tried to install a version of .NET 3.0 many
times but there is so much information about NET runtime software I can't
determine what to do. Nothing works....Help please!

If you use windows update all those sorts of issues will take care of
themselves.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Redistributable/Runtime Package

Bootstrapper (Near top of the page) or the full
Redistributable file (link is near the bottom of the page) available.
Note: If you choose to use the "Bootstrapper" (2.8MB download)
then you need to remain connected to the Internet for the installation to
complete. If you download the "Redistributable" to your hard drive
and then run this file, no Internet connection is required during the
install.
Either method will install the same set of files.

If you need .Net 3.0 SP2 then this is only way to get it,
so read this:
The .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Redistributable includes
..NET Frameworks 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2.
..Net 3.5 SP1 is not available using Windows Update, so get the
SP1 download file here.

Notes:
You may need to install .Net 3.5 installed before you can install 3.5 SP1
If so then download and install it here:

(A reboot IS required after installing this Service Pack)
Note: After rebooting wait about 2 minutes for mscorsvw.exe process to
complete it's task

If you installed XP SP3 you do not have to worry about installing XP SP2. As
for the .NET runtimes you do have to install the "lower" version .Net 2.0
framework SP2 first, then .Net Framework 3.0 SP2 and then (only if desired)
3.5 SP1 as well.
