how to install 5728 for MS purposes?

Good luck, but you should be okay. Upgrades usually upgrade the system they
are run from

Yeah, that's what I figure and either way will be ok I guess.
I'll know in a bit. <s>

So what is the correct information - testing upgrade from XP or upgrade from
RC1?
Thanks :)

Microsoft wants both scenarios tested. In the e-mail I got from MS as a
TechBeta tester they asked us to test both of the situations.

Oh ok Richard, thanks.
I misunderstood then. I thought it was to test 5600 to 5728 but now that
you mention it, that doesn't really make sense.
Since I only have XP on my main computer, I'll have to think about whether
or not I really want to go that route.
Thanks for setting me straight.
Paula

Right!

I really don't think that Microsoft is concerned about whether, or not,
Vista 5728 upgrades properly from Vista 5600.

But there are hundreds of millions of computers that have Windows XP upon
them. These are the people who will be trying to upgrade come November and
January.

They want to be certain that they can, with minimum issues.

Happy to report everything went well.
Upgrade from within Vista 5600 to 5728 went ok and also left XP installation
intact.
More testing on the benefits of the 5728 build will have to wait until a
later time....I have a hot date tonight! <s>

MS is requesting trying upgrade scenarios even if we plan to do a custom
installation in the end. They are looking for issues concerning upgrades.

MS is very interested in XP to Vista upgrade scenarios because they are the
most difficult involving kind of installation for MS to get right. If you
are in a position to install XP (without activating of course) and then
installing some apps that would be the best test bed to use for testing what
MS is looking for, which is bugs with upgrading XP to Vista.

Do what you are able to do. If you have an XP cd and really want to help,
load up XP on the partition you want Vista on and install some common apps
(like games). Don't activate XP because it won't be there long. Don't even
bother using Windows Update. Just junk up the XP installation and then try
the upgrade to Vista and report on how it all goes. When you are done just
do a custom installation of Vista to wipe it all out.

Don't do this, of course, if you already have XP installed on another
partition on the same machine (unless it is Home and you are playing with a
Pro to Vista scenario or vice versa).

Upgrade only works on the version of Windows that is running when you start
the Vista setup from the desktop. There is only danger if you boot with the
dvd and pick the wrong installation target or choose Custom from the
desktop.

I see that now.
Thanks Mr. B.!
