how to install 5728 for MS purposes?

P

Paula

What is the best way to install 5728 for the purposes of giving good
feedback to MS?
As an upgrade *within* VISTA (from 5600 to 5728) or an upgrade booting from
the burned iso?
Or does that make any difference?

A clean install - burn the ISO to cd, format a new partition, and then
install Vista to that partition.

Ummm maybe my post wasn't clear enough.
It is my understanding that build 5728 is to test how well an upgrade path
goes. I already have RC1 build 5600 installed. My question is what is the
best way to do the *upgrade*? Do I boot from the disk and tell it to do an
upgrade *or* do I already have vista running and insert the disk and upgrade
from within Vista? I hope I am stating that clearer. I just want to do an
upgrade from Vista 5600 to 5728 not a clean install.

Since XP is the current mainline OS, this would be the best and most
important upgrade path.

I booted 5728 dvd and it did not have an option to upgrade, saw something
that said to upgrade one must run it while in windows, hope this helps.

Please upgrade from 5600 to 5728. Is is an upgrade path the MS wants tested
and all feedback provided is welcome. To start the upgrade you must start
setup from within Windows.

Paula

I'm sorry...I don't understand your answer.
What does XP have to do with this?
I am simply asking how to upgrade from Vista 5600 to 5728.

Thanks Henry.
Yes it did help.

I don't understand why ms want people to test the upgrade from 5600 to 5728.
When customers buy Vista they will most likely be upgrading from XP so why
on earth do MS want to test this suggested upgrade path?

Hi Paula,

Microsoft wants to test upgrades from Windows XP, as there are about
millions of computers that have XP on it at the present. That is what will
be the most likely occurrence for an end user.

If you already have Vista on your computer it really does not make much
difference which way you install the latest version.

This is leading to confusion with some people saying MS wants people to test
the upgrade from 5600 to 5728.
So what is it I am supposed to do with this new version?

P

Paula

Oh ok Richard, thanks.
I misunderstood then. I thought it was to test 5600 to 5728 but now that
you mention it, that doesn't really make sense.
Since I only have XP on my main computer, I'll have to think about whether
or not I really want to go that route.
Thanks for setting me straight.

Don't upgrade your xp. this is an rc and would cause you problems because
lot's of programs will not run in it.

Amazing how things can get "messed" up - Paula - how did you arrive at the
conclusion 5728 was distributed to test upgrade path from 5600 to 5728?? -
also amazing the responses to your post!
Note the following from Microsoft (Note no reference to checking
upgrade....):

"Here's our official message to our testers:
Updated Test Build Available (September 2006): Microsoft is looking for
volunteers to help test an updated, interim release of Windows Vista. This
build (5728) has a number of improvements and updates from RC1, but has not
been put through the same internal testing process as RC1. We are making
this release available for a limited time only in order to get broad
distribution and testing in a variety of PC configurations. Click here if
you are interested in testing this release. Otherwise, please use the links
below to download RC1 (build 5600)."

Tom Ziegmann

Because this build is off the RTM build tree, and they want it tested so if
you buy Vista at retail and then want to upgrade from RC1 to RTM they want
to see if it works. Thats my understanding.

Because that is what people are saying in this NG.
Upgrading from 5600-5728 really does not make sense to me even though that
path is suggested by a number of people. I really need to find the truth
before I upgrade this. I don't want to be wasting my time and Microsofts
time with bugs that I could avoid and are not necessary.

OH GAWD!
I just thought of something.
I have a dual-boot configuration, XP on one HD and Vista on another separate
physical HD.
I just started the 5728 build from within vista and told it to upgrade but
there was no confirmation on what exactly it's upgrading!!! Is it upgrading
my Vista 5600 build to 5728 or my Windows XP that is on the dual boot.
GASP!
Not the worse thing that could happen in that I did have everything on the
XP side backed up but still...it should state something like "Are you sure
you want to go ahead with the XXX upgrade on X: partition" or something like
that.
Now I won't know what exactly it's upgrading until it's over.

Hi AJR,
I arrived at this conclusion based on the threads in this NG since I do not
have access to any of the private NG's. One to mention is the thread
started by William today titled "5728, clean install, upgrade or ignore" and
others.
