How to index archive.pst with Windows Desktop Search

G

Guest

Hi,

I'm using Vista Business and Office 2007, incl. WDS that comes with Vista.
In Outlook 2007, I'm using different *.pst files for archiving (archive.pst,
company1.pst, company2.pst etc.).

Normally, those *.pst are closed - Outlook opens them automatically to
archive mails, and closes them then again.

But - how can I index them with WDS so that an Outlook search will find
those "old" messages? "Search Options" will only allow to check *.pst files
that are *open*, there is no chance to add a closed file.

Any help?

Thanks, best regards,
Claus

You´ll have to connect to the pst-file for WDS to be able to index it.
Use File-> Open-> Outlook Data File... to connect to it.

Thanks Robert! So all my *.pst file archives (some GBs) have to be opened
(connected) in Outlook all the time (auto-archiving is every night, so there
are changes daily)?

Leads me to the question whether there is a way to get Lookout working with
Outlook 2007?

Best,
Claus

Lookout works in the same way. Pst-files can only be read through Outlook so
it has to be connected and loaded one way or the other.

No, not for me. In Lookout options I could select specific *.pst files for
indexing, and this was done even when they were closed.

Although not visible to you they were still linked or the files cannot be
read ;-)

Well, isn't this wonderful! So the morons who designed WDS left out
the one feature that is absolutely crucial for anyone with non-trivial
amounts of email. I have email archives going back more than ten
years, amounting to something like 4GB of data at his point. I need to
be able to find stuff in all of this, but quite obviously I do not
want all of my archives loaded in Outlook every time I use it.

There goes the last potential reason to upgrade to Vista...

P.S.: I note that there are third-party desktop search solutions that
do have the capability to search offline pst archives.
