The 'New Folder' in Windows XP does not normally
allow a period (.) as the first character of a
file name.

However, you can get around these by, using
a software like Winzip.
1. Open a zip file in WinZip
2. Extract any file
3. Specify a target folder name which can start with period (.)

That's it!

You can also create folders that start with period using the md command
at a command prompt.
