How to get Table captions to AutoCaption with Legal-Style numberi.

In Word97, I'm using the legal (3.1.2.1) paragraph style numbering scheme and
would like tables to be AutoCaptioned when I create them. I want the table
caption to eventually look like
"Table 3.1.2.1-1 My Big Old Table".

The AutoCaption part should automatically be
"Table 3.1.2.1-1" and I'll add the " My Big Old Table" part later.

The "-1" part (above) should be a sequential number for all tables within
paragraph
3.1.2.1 only. The next table in para. 3.1.2.1 should be "-2", etc.

I know how to turn on AutoCaption and I've seen where the "Chapter" can be
included in the AutoCaption generated text. However, I don't know if/how to
get the legal-style numbering to auto generate -- perhaps it's not possible?

Thanks!

You need to set up numbering for the heading styles and use them in
your document. For more information, see:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

When you've accessed the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, via the
Modify Style dialog box, all you need to do is click the Outline
Numbered tab and choose the second numbering scheme on the second row.
(If it doesn't display as

1 Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2

etc. you can press the Reset button first.)

Hi

I don't have a copy of Word 97 here, so you may need to amend the following
instructions to cope with changes in the dialog boxes.

I assume you're using the built-in heading styles to generate the paragraph
numbering. So that a paragraph numbered 3.1.2.1 is in style Heading 4. If
that's the case, then do Insert > Caption. Click the Numbering button and
tick the Include Chapter Number box, and then choose Heading 4 from the drop
down list. Your captions should now be numbered as you want.

Hope this helps.
