How to get rid of the notification poping up in system tray?

This is the most annoying feature in Windows XP... indeed...

I knew my disk is full, I knew my LAN is disconnected, I knew my WLAN is
connected, why the hell does it pop-up a notification which stop my
workflow(since I am using an auto-hide start bar, so it always jump out to
stop my work...)

Can I shut nofication down?
