Windows XP Pro on my Compaq PC. Separate login account for five
different users. One of the users aborted a software install,
and removed the program via control panel. However, every time
he logs in to his account, an install splash screen appears for the
application he aborted. He can cancel the install and it goes
away - but how to stop the install splash screen from continuing
to appear? I ran msconfig and looked at the STARTUP tab, but
didn't see anything that points to this. Nothing in his PROGRAMS
STARTUP either, and it only occurs on his account.

Install the program. Then uninstall it, the correct way! Will solve your
problems.

I tried to install the program, but it required a dependency I
didn't have. "Please install such-and-such, reboot and I will
continue to install". Well, I can't find such-and-such and I
would just like this darn splash screen to go away!

Seems to me this must be driven by a data script somewhere. I
thought someone on the group might know about that.

Why does that matter?

I can't recall the exact name - it was something that came into the
house as a demo program with a magazine subscription. My son tried
to do the install of some games.

It seems to me that there must be a Windows installation program
that is being data driven by a script somewhere. I thought
someone on the ng might have a clue regarding how this all works!
The name of the game you are having trouble with matters because someone
else might have had that exact same problem and had to deal with it in
a non-standard way. Well, in any case go to Start>Run and type
msconfig. Look in the Startup tab for something that resembles the
troublesome program and uncheck it. Or give more details about what the
program wants you to install.
