Sorry but Microsoft Office doesn't come with XP. You have to buy it and
it ain't cheap. A free alternative is Open Office which you can download
from http://www.openoffice.org/

You will need to buy MS Word. You can buy it separately or as part of
the MS Office suite. Since it is for your kids, you can buy the
Students & Teachers Edition which is far less expensive than the
regular version. Since you need Excel and Powerpoint also, buy the
entire MS Office suite Standard Edition.

I don't know where you live, but here (California, USA) CompUSA will
sell you the Students & Teachers Edition which runs about $150. Or
check with your childrens' school.

The alternative is to install OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) which is
free and can read/write MS Office formats.

In addition to what Alias said, Open Office will open and save documents in
MS Office format, just to re-assure you.

But it will also modify many things, depending on what was created, and
it will not look the same when opened in MS Word.

Only if you use very complicated and (usually) unnecessary formatting.....
KISS!

If this is to be used for school work it is best to use the same standard as
the school is using.

The last thing a student needs is formatting problems with a term paper.
Also, his school is likely to be giving instruction on the programs that
they (the school) has standardized on.

Why cause unnecessary complications.

Then in that case the school should provide discounted copies! In actual
fact I know of cases where documents have been submitted from open office to
a body that specifies MS Office, and no-body has spotted the difference.

Right. The O/P apparently didn't check with the school. He may find out that
he "can" get a discounted copy of Office.

I can pick one up right now at Walmart, paying the same price as in the
local college book store.

As will the Corel Office suite. My pref. is Wordperfect over Word.
It's just since it says MS most companies & schools go that route.

That's not true - it works only for documents that work well as RTF, it
does not handle a lot of the standard formatting that makes Word worth
using.

You really need to tell people the downside before you tell them it
replaces Word, because many people work with businesses and it really
screws with Word formatting. I've had few documents import properly in
several years of working with nix and OS applications to import Office
documents.

I think you'll find the current version of OO (2.03 I think) is a VAST
improvement on anything that's gone before.......

switch.......

Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows has ever come with Word
nor with any other significant application software.

If you want Word, you need to buy it, either alone, as part of Microsoft
Office, or, most inexpensively, as part of Microsoft Works Suite.

, is there any way of installing it without having to pay for it as

There's no legal way to acquire *anything* for sale without paying for it.

Then you will need to buy Microsoft Office, which unfortunately is
expensive. As alternatives, you might want to see if they can make do with
the free OpenOffice or the less espensive WordPerfect Office or StarOffice.

And that's still like stating that "It mostly works, most of the time".

And many can/will, but those that utilize the power/features of Word
will have a large cost in converting their documents.

Too bad it still doesn't feature 100% compatibility with Word and PowerPoint
formatting.
