How to get client to use VPN

Michael McNally

Hi

I have set up a VPN so that homeworkers are able to access
our LAN etc.

I have what I hope is an easy to answer question.

If the homeworker is using broadband how do you get the
machine to use the VPN connection instead of the standard
broadband connection?

Thanks

Hi

Re: What are you asking?

Exactly what I said. How do you get the client to use the
VPN instead of the non VPN internet connection.?
What is there to stop the client using the Non VPN
connection? How does the machine know that a target host
name is accessed via VPN and not plain broadband?

The plain broadband isn't 'switched off'

I hope that makes the question clearer

Hi Michael, if you are looking for a way to use both the LAN connection and
the user's broadband connection for surfing the internet and other internet
related services simultaneously then you will need to uncheck "Use Default
Gateway On Remote Network" in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings of your VPN
connection.

What changes when you make the VPN connection is the routing table.
Basically the client gets an IP address on your netowrk and all the hosts on
the subnet specified in your VPN server's setup will be accessed through the
VPN. You can see what the routing table looks like before and after making
the connection by going to the command line and typing: "route print" - you
can also modify the routing table from there as you wish. If you want all
the client's Internet traffic to be routed through the VPN then you want to
check the "Use Default Gateway on remote network" option in the VPN
connection's properties (on the client side). The truth is - you can't
really force them to check it that option. I mean they should be able to
access their porn web sites from their home machines without having to go
through your network, right? Why would you want them to use your bandwidth
anyway?

Hi

Thanks.

When both Frank and yourself mentioned "Use Default
Gateway on remote network" It pointed me in the right
direction.

Thanks
