How to force XP to use standard vga driver?

My system is using XP SP2. It's using some gfx driver which is not listed
anywhere and I can't uninstall it. I can't find it in the device manager or
display applet and the driver is not in the add/remove programs section.

However I do know there's a gfx driver because I can get high resolutions
and 32bit colors. In the display applet, the display adapter type and
information are blank.

I can't get rid of the darn thing. I got a new gfx card and the drivers
refuse to install properly and my guess is that the current driver is being
'sticky'.

I also used Driver Cleaner Pro and removed the ones I think are gfx drivers
but left some nVidia drivers because my chipset is nVidia and didn't want
to remove them less my computer gets screwed up.

So my question is how do I force XP to use the generic standard vga driver?

well if you got a new graphics card and the cmos has enabled
the pci slot and your pnp is enabled in the cmos and
you plugged in your monitor to that card, then
the generic drivers may not work

i suggest you pull the card out.
plug your monitor into the standard
port and then go into safemode
to clean up the mess with the
special drivers.

afterwards, install the card, plug in your
monitor and wait for windows to discover
the new hardware and will likely ask you to
install the setup disks for the card..

If your monitor is recognizable by XP, it's not unusual to get decent
display options with the basic in-box driver.

What you might try:
Open Device Manager and go to properties for your current display card.
Click Uninstall. Shutdown. Disconnect to open case and install new card.
Reconnect everything. Start computer and Windows to install drivers.
