I have 2000 Server with ISA and RRAS.

Clients on the local network can ping, tracert and browse
the Internet, but I cannot get Outlook to send or receive
mail from a remote POP3 server. Strange thing is that
Outlook doesn't return any error message?

It was working, It just stopped!

Regards,
Owen

You probably get your best advice on this from an Outlook
newsgroup.

I don't beleive it's an outlook problem. The 2000 server
seems to be blocking port 25 and 110. Surely all the
outlook clients didn't stop at the same time?

If you're dealing with a remote server then you may have
some firewall issues, either within your own installation
or with your ISP. I had them too, and was forced to move
ports 25 and 110 to 5025 and 5110. You can easily do
this with Outlook or Outlook Express. You would have
to adjust the server ports too.

I stopped all exchange services (not being used), Set
fire wall to pass everything, and Accept ALL in ISA. The
modem light doesn't even blink when I try to get mail.

I know how to change the ports in Outlook, but where do I
change the port mapping in 2000 Server. I'm not using NAT
btw.

You would need to change the port numbers on your
remote POP3 server. I don't know what type of POP3
server you use there - I'm sure the question of POP &
SMTP ports is addressed in its manual.

Looking at your modem lights for traffic monitoring is
not a good trouble-shooting method. Enable the network
connection icon in the System Tray instead, then open it
up while pinging external machines. This will immediately
tell you if packets are getting out, and if they are being
returned.

To see if you can access your remote POP3 server,
telnet on port 110 from your workstations. If the signal
is going out then you will see the byte counter ticking
over on your dial-up monitor.

Sorry for not explaining this clearer. The mail server I
want to collect from belongs to the ISP. Our 2000 server
just isn't passing the requests, even thought browsing,
ping etc work. I can even access the mail boxes via
webmail, and there is mail in it.

So far everything you've said suggests that you have
a firewall issue. This could be related to a hardware
firewall, some setting in your router, a dedicated
software firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm), a firewall integrated
with your virus scanner or a firewall function implemented
by a VPN. Not knowing your setup, it is not possible for
me guess which one it is.

Yes. I agree. Sounds like a firewall issue. But the setup
is : Clients and 2000 Server pluged into a HUB. A POTS
modem on the com port of the server. MS Firewall Service,
RRAS and ISA. Thats it.

Something in the 2000 box is stopping this. The only
thing you have mentioned that I have not tried is the
Virus software. It does not have any mail checking
funcion I know of, but.. It will be the first thing
Monday.
